Marty Spence
Marty Spence is supporting the work of The Loyola School by donating a dozen original oil paintings to benefit our General Scholarship Fund. All 12 paintings will be on display at the Art Mingle. Some will be sold in a silent auction and others during a live auction.
“We are surrounded by many worthy causes, but the cause of The Loyola School is paramount,” Marty says in explaining her gift. “It is one which not only teaches a man to fish, but also how to build their boats and weave their nets, assuring . . . achievements and success to those who otherwise would not have such opportunities.”

Marty brings to her art the intensive study of the child and family throughout her full-time career in pediatrics at the now-closed Children’s Hospital and Johns Hopkins Hospital followed by many years in program development and administration for the Children’s Inpatient Unit at Sheppard Pratt.
At 50, she took her first art course. Upon completion, her instructor advised her to continue studying at the Maryland Institute College of Art. With great trepidation, she enrolled in evening courses for several years while continuing to work full-time, until completion of a certificate in Fine Arts.
Devoted to The Children’s Inpatient Unit at Sheppard Pratt, however, she paused her formal study of art until retirement 10 years ago. Since then, Marty has studied with Barbara Kiwak, pursuing art as intensely as her study of child psychiatry.
She has participated in several solo and multiple group exhibits and has featured paintings in the Charles B. Reeves Collection and Sheppard Pratt Health System Hospital Collection. Marty has been commissioned for several large oil landscapes and has sold many originals and thousands of note cards duplicating her originals, which are really mini prints, throughout the metropolitan area.
“ I am putting together the love and study of the child and family with the love and study of art,” she notes. “Art is capturing a moment of time. A moment of one’s soul. That is why every piece of art is different even if we are looking at the same model or the same still life or landscape. It has to be different because art reflects who we are at the moment, and how we are relating to the object or person at that moment.
“In doing so, we are bringing our histories with us: Our past, present and hopes for the future just as we do in every experience of our everyday lives and interactions. Now it seems, I am putting the two [loves] together.”
Marty and her husband, Dick, offer this donation explaining, “We very much support the work you and others are doing for the Loyola School students and their families. Above all, you are providing hope with the promise of education. In many ways it is an extension of my work throughout my career.”
